Building on the success of the AA's 2025 Venice Biennale project, Margherissima, the visiting school explored how the project's key artefact, a 15-metre-long model exhibited at the Forte Marghera, could evolve and transform to better shape Marghera's future. Margherissima was a speculative project led by the architect and designer Nigel Coates that imagined a new neighbourhood on 44 hectares of derelict land in the south-east corner of Marghera, home to one of the busiest ports in Italy. The visiting school further developed Margherissima's vision over 9 days in late August 2025 in residence at the Forte Marghera. Through a series of hands-on tutorials exploring GIS, 3D scanning and context-led model-making techniques, participants worked to propose alternative scenarios for the region. The visiting school also included guest lectures and exhibition visits to supplement site surveys and archival research. The resulting interventions were integrated into the existing model and exhibited as part of the Biennale. For more information visit Instagram.
